NGO coordinator, honest read. AVOID at all costs: (1) "Orphanage tourism" - most so-called orphanages are actually institutions of children WITH living parents who are removed for the tourist revenue; UNICEF and reputable NGOs actively campaign against this. (2) Elephant "sanctuaries" where you bathe or ride - almost always cruel training behind the scenes. (3) Turtle "hatchery" pay-to-hold-a-baby-turtle - most disorient the hatchlings and reduce survival to sea. (4) Anything called "voluntourism" charging 1500+ USD for a week including a beach hotel and vague "helping the community". LEGITIMATE work: teaching English at rural schools (via British Council-recognized programs), post-disaster infrastructure with genuine NGOs (Habitat for Humanity Sri Lanka), environmental conservation with Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society or Turtle Conservation Project (real, permit-holding orgs), and women's vocational skills programs.

4 weeks CAN matter for specific tasks (English conversation practice, small infrastructure builds, event support) but is genuinely too short for teaching curriculum or medical clinics. Match your time to the task, not the other way around.

How to VET an organisation before you commit and pay: (1) Ask to speak (video call) with a previous volunteer from 6+ months ago, not one they hand-pick. (2) Ask what their long-term local staff structure looks like - real NGOs employ mostly Sri Lankans and use foreign volunteers to supplement, not replace. (3) Ask what happens on days when no volunteers are around - if the answer is "nothing" the "work" is fake. (4) Fee should cover ONLY room, board, transport and program overhead; typical ethical placement 400-800 USD for 4 weeks. Anything much higher without exceptional overhead disclosure is suspicious.
