We want to rent a self drive car for our holiday. Do we absolutely need to buy full comprehensive insurance from the local rental agency.

Yes you absolutely unquestionably must securely purchase full comprehensive cover directly from the authorized local rental agency. International travel policies rarely successfully cover highly specific local third party vehicle damages.

Local traffic is incredibly aggressively chaotic. Even if you are a completely phenomenal driver minor scratches from wildly passing tuk tuks are universally inevitable. Having completely full local insurance successfully legally perfectly saves you from massive extortionate repair bills entirely on the spot.
