Yes, they are completely different. Coconut toddy is tapped from palm trees along the hot southern and western coastlines and has a slightly sour, yeasty flavor profile. Kithul toddy is tapped from the Kithul fishtail palm, which grows exclusively in the cooler, wet highland regions like Kandy and Ratnapura. Kithul toddy is considered much rarer, significantly sweeter, and generally higher quality, making it highly prized by locals over the standard coastal coconut variety.
