Is Galle Fort worth overnighting Sunday after the hills or just a day trip
Coming down from the hills Sunday. Is overnighting inside Galle Fort worth the hotel spend after Kandy nights, or is a day-trip loop enough if we already feel procession-tired.

Overnight wins if you want dusk and early morning on the ramparts without watching a bus clock. Day-trip only works if you already sleep nearby and arrive before the heat.
If you want beach swim time the same night, Unawatuna is the softer base and you still day into the Fort. Pure Fort overnight is for walls and lanes, not sand.
Book something inside or just outside the walls so you walk, not tuk-hop after dark. The value is the evening quiet once day coaches leave.
