I have been a strict vegetarian for over ten years. Will I struggle to find tasty meatless meals during my two week trip across the island or are vegetarian options widely available.

Sri Lanka is genuinely a paradise for vegetarians thanks to strong Buddhist and Hindu influences across the country. The traditional rice and curry meal typically includes five to seven different vegetable curries served with steamed rice. Try jackfruit curry called polos, tender cashew curry, dhal, beetroot curry, mallung greens, and pumpkin curry at any local eatery.

Look for restaurants displaying a green sign with Pure Vegetarian written on it. These are usually run by Tamil Hindu families and serve absolutely no meat, fish, or eggs on the premises. South Indian style thali meals at these places are incredibly affordable at around two hundred and fifty rupees and include unlimited refills.
