April is notoriously the hottest and most humid month in Sri Lanka before the monsoon breaks. Visiting Anuradhapura in April will be intensely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.

If you visit in April, you must strictly limit your exploring to the early morning before 10 AM, and late afternoon after 4 PM. The midday heat is dangerously strong in the open ruins.

Remember to bring thick socks! You have to walk barefoot around the stupas, and the stone paths bake in the April sun. Thick socks will prevent the soles of your feet from burning.
