Yes, absolutely visitable now, and one of the islands genuine off-the-map experiences. Mannar Island connects to the mainland by a long causeway. Highlights: the 800+ year-old baobab tree (an African import from Arab traders), wild donkey herds wandering the dunes, the colonial Mannar Fort, and Talaimannar pier with the lighthouse where the old India ferry used to depart. From Talaimannar you can do a boat trip on a calm day out to the Adams Bridge sand chain (a UNESCO-tentative natural feature, the chain of sand islands almost touching India) with a permit and a local boatman, weather-dependent. Best from December to March (calmer seas, migratory flamingos). Allow 2 nights at minimum; it is a long detour but pays off if you like remote, almost-Indian-feeling places.
Adding Mannar plus Wilpattu en route to Anuradhapura. Donkeys and baobabs in Sri Lanka, who knew. Thank you!
Combine Mannar with Wilpattu en route, you pass right by. Mannar plus Wilpattu safari plus Anuradhapura is the classic underrated northwest loop.
Bird photographer here, Mannar is unreal for flamingos and waders Nov-Feb. The salt pans light up pink at sunset.
The Adam Bridge boat permit is processed through the Navy/Wildlife office, not online; allow a day for paperwork, or get a local fixer in Mannar town to arrange it. Sea conditions can cancel the trip even with permit, so build in flexibility.
