I want to see blue whales from Mirissa but I am worried the season is ending and that some boats chase the whales aggressively Is late May still okay and how do I choose a responsible operator

The prime Mirissa season is roughly November to April, so late May is the very tail end: sightings still happen but the sea gets rougher as the southwest monsoon builds, and some operators wind down. If you are too late, the east coast (Trincomalee) season runs the opposite months and may be the better bet by then. To pick an ethical boat: choose smaller operators that follow the approach guidelines (keep distance, no chasing, engine slowed near the animal, limited boats per whale), avoid anyone promising "guaranteed" sightings, and check recent reviews mentioning responsible behaviour. Take seasickness tablets, the swell is real.

A good captain cuts the engine and lets the whale come into view rather than gunning toward it. If your boat is racing and cutting off the animal, that is the wrong operator.

Understood, I will try the earliest ethical boat and keep Trinco as a backup. Thanks for the honesty about the season.

Go on the first boat at dawn. Calmer seas, better light, and you beat the cluster of boats that builds later. Rough afternoon swell in May can cancel trips entirely.
