Flags, current, boats. Should I worry near Little Adam's Peak or stick to the hotel pool?

Read flags near Little Adam's Peak and ask a lifeguard or boatman, not a hotel poster. If locals aren't in the water, don't be first. Current after rain isn't a debate.

Stuck to waist-deep where people were swimming. Hotel pool for actual swimming. Zero regret.

If you're tired, stay nearer the bus stand / town centre in Little Adam's Peak and skip chasing a perfect sunset. Pull cash in Colombo, Kandy, or Galle first — cards are a maybe. Locals will tell you if a ticket is counter-only.
