I want to see the 360 degree view near Gampola but the spiral stairs look very narrow. Is there a point where it becomes too tight for comfort.

The Ambuluwawa Tower is indeed a challenge if you are afraid of heights. The base is quite wide, but as you climb higher, the spiral staircase narrows significantly to the point where two people can barely pass each other. If you have vertigo, you might want to stop at the middle platforms. The view from halfway up is still breathtaking and far less dizzying than the very top section.

Try to visit early on a weekday to avoid the crowds. When the tower is busy, the narrow top section can feel quite claustrophobic as people try to move up and down simultaneously. Wear shoes with good grip as the wind at the top can be surprisingly strong.
