Is the coastal train useful if I'm staying in Balangoda, or is it just scenic?

Keep seeing coastal line photos. From Balangoda, is it practical transport or only a joyride?

If you need a seat through the hills, reserve. From Balangoda, an unreserved hop with big bags at busy hours is a gamble. 'Observation carriage' talk is blog folklore — ask the counter what exists that day.

Reserved Kandy–Ella and stopped stressing. Unreserved was okay midweek with small bags. With a suitcase I'd reserve.

If you're tired, stay nearer the bus stand / town centre in Balangoda and skip chasing a perfect sunset. Pull cash in Colombo, Kandy, or Galle first — cards are a maybe. Locals will tell you if a ticket is counter-only.
