Is the Dambulla cave temple worth visiting and how long do I need there.
1 Answer
The Dambulla Cave Temple is absolutely worth visiting and ranks among the most impressive religious sites in all of Asia. The UNESCO World Heritage complex features five separate caves carved into a massive granite rock housing over one hundred and fifty Buddha statues and stunning ancient murals covering more than two thousand square meters of rock surface. Some of the paintings date back over two thousand years to the first century BCE. Plan for at least ninety minutes to properly explore all five caves without rushing. The climb up to the caves involves roughly three hundred stone steps and takes about fifteen minutes at a moderate pace. Wear modest clothing covering shoulders and knees and be prepared to remove your shoes at the cave entrance. The stone ground gets very hot in the afternoon so wearing socks is highly recommended. The entrance fee for foreigners is around twenty five hundred rupees which includes access to all caves and the small museum at the base. Visit early in the morning around seven thirty to avoid both the brutal midday heat and the tour bus crowds. Watch out for the many monkeys near the entrance as they are notorious for snatching water bottles, hats, sunglasses, and loose bags from unwary tourists. Dambulla pairs perfectly with a morning Sigiriya climb as the two sites are only twenty minutes apart by road. Many visitors combine both into a single unforgettable cultural triangle day.
