The Gemological Museum in Ratnapura is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the geological science behind Sri Lankas famous stones. It has an excellent display of raw, unpolished crystals and explains the traditional mining techniques used in the region perfectly.

While it does have a small shop attached, the primary focus of the museum is educational rather than just pushing sales. It is a fantastic, low pressure environment to learn exactly what rough sapphires and rubies look like before you go shopping at the commercial boutiques.
