Is USD 3 rice and curry still a thing or did Instagram lie?
Two backpackers, 3 weeks, trying to stay under USD 40/day. Are hoppers still coins? What is a tourist-cafe trap vs a lunch packet?

Lunch packet / rice and curry in a local "hotel" is still the daily staple. Typical traveller reports this year: LKR 250-600 local rice and curry, 300-700 kottu (chicken toward the top), egg hopper 80-200, king coconut 100-150, Lion in a restaurant 500-900. Tourist-beach mains 1,500-3,500. Best meals are the places with no English menu and a queue of office guys at 12:30.
Galle Fort / A-Bay / Ella cafes are a different country, price-wise. I blew 2,800 on toast in Ella and then ate a 350 packet around the corner.
Ask for "rice and curry, not too spicy" and you will still get spicy. Yoghurt or buffalo curd for the burn.
