Isurumuniya Vihara (2km from Anuradhapura sacred city) is unique — carved into a granite outcrop with a small pond, and houses the famous 'Isurumuniya Lovers' stone carving (a Sri Lankan icon showing an intimate couple, thought to be Prince Saliya and low-caste Asokamala). Also elephants, horse riders, and Buddhist reliefs on the rock face.

Small entry fee ~500 LKR foreigner. Best late afternoon when soft light hits the carvings. Combine with Vessagiri (a similar cave temple 500m away, even quieter). Together they show the artistic heart of the Anuradhapura era in a way the bigger stupas don't.
