Jaffna Fort, completed by the Dutch East India Company in 1680 over earlier Portuguese foundations, is one of the best-preserved VOC star forts in Asia. The five pointed bastions are engineered from marine limestone and fossilized coral rag quarried from the adjacent lagoon islands. The outer ramparts are sloped to deflect cannon fire and bonded with shell-lime mortar mixed with jaggery water. An expansive outer moat was connected to the Jaffna Lagoon via tidal culverts: incoming daily tides automatically flushed seawater through the moat, preventing stagnant mosquito breeding and creating a wide water barrier against ground sappers.
