The Japanese Peace Pagoda (Sama Ceitya) crowns the forested maritime headland of Rumassala near Unawatuna. Built in 2004 by Japanese Buddhist monks of the Nipponzan Myohoji order, the pristine white circular stupa features four gold-painted statues depicting key milestones in the life of Gautama Buddha. A shaded, 15-minute coastal forest trail connects the pagoda down to the secluded bay of Jungle Beach. The upper stupa terrace offers commanding 360-degree views across the blue expanse of Galle Harbour directly toward the historic ramparts of Galle Fort.
Admission is free; visitors must remove footwear and hats at the outer courtyard steps, walking in clockwise circumambulation around the dome.
Visit at sunset (around 5:45 PM) when evening monk chanting and drumming ceremonies echo across the ocean promontory.
Rumassala hill is steeped in Ramayana folklore as a chunk of the Himalayan medicinal mountain dropped by the monkey warrior Hanuman.
