The Kadugannawa Ambalama is a beautifully preserved piece of Sri Lankan history. In ancient times, before modern transport, an Ambalama was a free public resting place built specifically for weary travelers, merchants, and pilgrims making the grueling trek up the steep mountains on foot or by bullock cart.

This specific brick structure was constructed in the early 19th century. It sits right next to the busy modern A1 highway as a powerful, preserved reminder of the incredible historical difficulty of traveling through the steep Kadugannawa pass.
