The Kadugannawa Incline on the Main Line is a masterwork of 1860s mountain railway engineering designed by Chief Engineer G.L. Molesworth. The track climbs 1,400 feet in just 13 miles on a continuous 1-in-45 grade, carving through solid granite cliffs and traversing the famous Meenagala Rock Pass (where trains run on an open shelf blasted out of sheer vertical cliff walls). Operating broad-gauge trains without cog racks relies purely on steel-on-steel adhesion: locomotives blast dry silica sand onto rails ahead of driving wheels to overcome wheel spin caused by wet mountain mists and fallen leaves.
