We are visiting the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary. Since it is a protected wetland, are the local homestays allowed to serve fresh lagoon crab and prawns caught locally.

Yes, the local fishing communities in Kalametiya have traditional fishing rights in specific zones of the lagoon. The homestays there serve some of the best, freshest crab curries in the south. The money you pay directly supports the families who also act as conservation guides for the bird sanctuary during the day.

Take the early morning paddle boat tour to see the birds, then have the spicy prawn curry for lunch. It is a perfect day.
