The old Lady Manning Bridge at Kallady spans the narrowest ocean choke point of Batticaloa Lagoon. During spring ebb tides around 8:30 AM, water drains rapidly into the ocean, generating currents of 3.5 to 4.5 knots through bridge pilings. Kayakers and small skiffs face steep standing waves where outgoing lagoon water collides with incoming ocean groundswells.
