Constructed by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) between 1667 and 1676, Kalpitiya Fort controls the entrance to Puttalam Lagoon. Built without local quarry granite, military engineers utilized porous marine coral stone (coral rag) quarried from adjacent offshore reefs, bonded with thick slaked shell-lime mortar mixed with sea sand and organic jaggery water. The four pointed corner bastions feature outward-sloping walls that absorb ocean wave energy and cannon impact. Slaked lime washes applied biannually react with atmospheric carbon dioxide, forming a breathable calcite crust that protects soft coral blocks from salt exfoliation.
