School owner honest breakdown. KALPITIYA has TWO wind seasons: MAIN SEASON May to September (southwest monsoon, consistent 18-25 knots most days, side-onshore, reliable enough that most days you sail 4-6 hours), SECONDARY SEASON December to March (northeast monsoon, lighter and more variable 12-18 knots, better for beginners than experts). For intermediates, June-August is the sweet spot. LOCATIONS: (1) the LAGOON (also called Vella Island lagoon area) is huge, flat, waist-deep for hundreds of meters - THE spot to progress transitions, jumps and unhooked tricks safely; (2) the OPEN SEA outside the sand spit gives real swell and wave riding but is committing for intermediates - only go with a local kite guide for the first sessions. GEAR RENTAL: full kit (kite + board + harness + wetsuit if wanted) around 40-60 USD per day, weekly discounts of 20-30 percent typical, buoyancy vest and helmet usually included at reputable schools. INSIST on a downwinder-safety talk before your first session and NEVER kite alone.
Spotting a good kite school: (1) They ASK your certification level and refuse gear that is above it. (2) They have radio/whistle safety cover on the water during peak hours. (3) Their gear is 2 years old maximum, not sun-bleached wrecks. (4) They ask about your medical/insurance in writing. (5) They offer downwinders and are set up for pickup with a jeep or boat. AVOID: any operator that hands you a kite and just points at the lagoon. Look at the school's photos - if all their students are wearing hotel-lobby shoes and no vests, that is a red flag.
