During the southwest monsoon (May to September), Kalpitiya experiences average winds of 20-28 knots blowing non-stop day and night. Kappalady Lagoon provides buttery flat water sheltered by a narrow sandbar, ideal for freestyle unhooked tricks, but space is limited to roughly 15-20 kites simultaneously. Vella Island (Paradise Island), 45 minutes north by boat, features a 2.5 km offshore sandbar generating world-class offshore flat water. However, riding at Vella is strictly offshore; never ride there without paying for organized safety boat cover.
Kite sizes: a 7m or 9m kite covers riders between 70-80 kg for 90% of the summer season; bringing 12m or larger kites is unnecessary unless chasing light thermal mornings.
Salt spray and wind-blown sand around Kalpitiya strip electrical connectors quickly; coat electronics and camera gear with dielectric silicone spray before staying in rustic beach camps.
