Kalpitiya vs Weligama surfing - beginner should go where?

Weligama for beginners - shallow sand-bottom beach break, gentle waves, dozens of surf schools, board rentals, warm water, no reef risk. Ideal learning environment. Kalpitiya is KITE surfing (not surfing) - different sport, requires trainer + more setup, more expensive. For first-time surfing: Weligama. Schools: Ceylon Sliders, Lion's Rest, Weligama Bay Surf. USD 15-30 per 2-hour lesson including board + rashguard. Peak season Nov-April.
Also worth: Mirissa (adjacent to Weligama) for slightly bigger beginner-friendly waves. Ahangama for once you've progressed to intermediate. Kalpitiya only if you're switching to kite surfing. Start Weligama for surf.
