Read horror stories. Have kids (10, 13). Is 2nd class reserved actually reserved or a scam? Should we splurge on Observation?

Depends what class you buy. 2nd class UNRESERVED = standing room only, yes horror stories are true. 2nd class RESERVED = you have a seat, no issues. Observation Saloon = premium seats, air-con, tinted windows (ironically bad for photos). Best value for family: 2nd class reserved. Book at railway.gov.lk or via 12Go 2-3 weeks ahead. Kids will love it.

Observation is actually not the best for photos because the windows are tinted and don't open. 2nd class reserved has windows that open (blast the wind, hang out, take photos). Way better experience. Save the money for a nice lunch in Ella.
