The lead elephant of the Kandy Esala Perahera—the Raja Athu (Maligawa Tusker)—must fulfill ancient royal physical standards (Hasti Lakshana). The tusker must possess a flat, level spine (Maha Pittha), symmetrical upward-curving tusks, a trunk that rests comfortably on the ground, and seven physical contact points touching the earth simultaneously (four feet, trunk, penis, and tail). The animal must demonstrate absolute calm amid whip-cracking, flaming torchwheels, and synchronized drumming. The golden Karanduwa (relic casket) sits atop an upholstered wooden saddle lashed with velvet straps, sheltered beneath an illuminated canopy.
