All three are professional shows for tourists, but they ARE performed by trained Kandyan dancers from the lineage families and the dances themselves are authentic temple-and-court traditions. YMBA (Young Mens Buddhist Association) hall has the longest-running show with strong drumming; Kandy Lake Club is in a nice setting with often the biggest cast; the Red Cross Auditorium has a more intimate feel. Programmes are similar across all three: opening puja, Ves dance (the masked dance), Naiyandi, Vannama, Pantheru (tambourine), and the closing FIRE WALKING. Run time roughly 60-75 minutes. Tickets around 1500-2500 LKR depending on seat. FIRE WALKING SAFETY: the dancers train for years on hot coals at specific temperatures and use particular foot conditioning; do not attempt to copy. The performance happens in the courtyard at the end - audience watches from a safe railing. Bring small change for the optional photo session with the dancers after.
YMBA show was excellent. Sit in the second or third row for the drums - the front row vibrations are intense.
For something genuinely more authentic than the nightly tourist shows: attend a Kandy temple festival or the Esala Perahera in July-August. The dancers and drummers performing at the perahera are the same lineage, but the context is the real one.
