Kandy to Ella observation seats sold out online — is standing in 3rd class for 7 hours actually doable?

Wanted the scenic Kandy–Ella train. Seat92 / station counter shows no observation or 2nd-class reserved left for our day. Partner says stand in 3rd class with the door open like Instagram. I have a bad knee. Is standing the whole way realistic, or should we bus / hire a car and stop for viewpoints instead?

Reserved seats sell out fast; unreserved 2nd/3rd can mean standing, especially on popular morning trains. Doorway hanging is unsafe and conductors will move people. With a bad knee I would not plan seven hours on your feet. Options: try another date or Nanu Oya–Ella shorter scenic hop if seats appear, take an intercity bus/van, or hire a car and stop at viewpoints on your own clock. If you still ride unreserved, board early, claim a bench seat if any, keep bags in sight, and accept that the Instagram door shot is not a seating plan.

Many of my guests switch to a car for Kandy–Ella when seats are gone. You lose the train romance, you gain bathroom stops and no knee swelling.
