For the classic scenic route, sit on the RIGHT side of the train when departing Kandy toward Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya) to view terraced valleys and St. Clair's waterfall. After passing Nanu Oya toward Ella, the LEFT side provides dramatic views of the Horton Plains ridge, Idalgashinna gap, and deep valley drops. Reserved 2nd and 3rd class carriages feature overhead metal luggage racks that fit standard 65L backpacks; oversized hardshell suitcases must be stowed in vestibules or behind end-row seats.
Seat reservations open exactly 30 days prior to departure at 10:00 AM local time on the official Sri Lanka Railways digital booking system.
Second Class reserved is widely favored over 1st Class AC because 2nd Class carriages have operable drop-down windows that allow open-air photography.
If reserved tickets are sold out, purchase an unreserved ticket on departure morning and board at Peradeniya Junction for better seat availability.
