The Kanniya Hot Springs (situated 8km west of Trincomalee) comprise seven shallow square masonry wells enclosed by a low wall. Geological surveys indicate the thermal waters originate from deep meteoric water circulation descending through fractured Precambrian Highland Complex gneiss along active regional fault lines, where geothermal heating warms water temperatures between 35°C and 42°C. The varying temperatures across the seven adjacent wells are caused by differing subterranean mixing ratios between rising thermal mineral spring water and cool shallow local groundwater aquifers.
