Everyone writes about the July festival with the fire walking and kavadi dancers but I arrive three weeks before it Is Kataragama worth a night in an ordinary week What happens at the evening puja how does a town sacred to Buddhists Hindus Muslims and the Vedda people actually share the space and what should a respectful visitor know about the Menik Ganga ritual bathing and offerings

Living near the sacred city half my life so yes an ordinary week is arguably the better visit The evening puja is the heartbeat go for the 1830 ceremony Cross the Menik Ganga footbridge with the pilgrim flow everyone bathes or at least wets their head in the river first purification before approaching the deity Carry a fruit platter offering bought at the stalls (300 to 500 LKR the vendors assemble it correctly for you) Join the queue into the Maha Devale the drumming builds the curtain opens briefly for the blessing the energy in that courtyard on an ordinary Tuesday exceeds most countries festival days The shared space reality is the remarkable part the Buddhist Kiri Vehera dagoba stands a short walk north pilgrims flow between kovil and stupa without boundary the mosque and the Muslim shrine sit within the same sacred precinct and during the festival season the Vedda community arrives asserting the oldest claim of all Nobody polices the theology the god of Kataragama answers everyone is the operating principle and it works Respectful visitor notes dress covering shoulders and knees shoes off well before the inner courtyards no flash during the puja the smashing coconuts station is participatory if invited ask before photographing pilgrims in devotional states Stay the night the dawn puja at 0430 with mist on the river is the version the day trippers from Yala never see Combine logically Kataragama sits at the Yala doorstep pair the safari morning with the puja evening

The Pada Yatra walkers start arriving on foot from Jaffna weeks before the festival you may meet the early pilgrims on the east coast roads a two month walk down the island
