I heard about the big Kataragama festival with fire walking. When does it happen and is it worth planning my trip around?

The Esala Perahera in Kataragama usually falls in July or August (dates vary each year based on the lunar calendar). It's a massive, colorful procession with elephants, dancers, and fire walking. It's very crowded and chaotic but incredibly atmospheric if you like cultural festivals. Book accommodation early if you want to go - Kataragama gets packed.

It's one of the biggest Hindu-Buddhist festivals in the country. Very different vibe from Kandy Perahera - more raw and devotional. Worth it if you enjoy that kind of energy.
