Kataragama (southeastern Sri Lanka) is one of South Asia's most unusual sacred sites — the same complex holds shrines revered by Hindus (Kataragama Deviyo/Skanda), Buddhists (Kiri Vihara), Muslims (Al-Khizr shrine), and Vedda indigenous peoples. Evening puja is a sensory overload — chanting, drums, incense, oil lamps.

Best visit: 5-7pm daily for the main puja. Dress: covered shoulders and knees, remove shoes in shrine areas. Buy fruit offerings from shops outside. July-August Kataragama Perahera is a huge annual festival with fire walking. Non-devotees welcome throughout.
