Thambili (king coconut) is the ORANGE-shelled variety — sweeter, more electrolytes, milder taste, drunk fresh throughout Sri Lanka. Regular coconut (kurumba, green shell) has more meat but less sweet water. Thambili is preferred as roadside refreshment; regular used for cooking.

Fresh thambili from roadside stalls 100-200 LKR each — vendor cracks it open with machete, you drink water through natural opening, then they crack it further to scoop the soft young meat with a spoon of the shell. Try both — thambili is the traveler's classic.
