The Kirigalpotta trail begins near Horton Plains visitor center and covers 14km of rough wilderness terrain climbing to 2,388 meters. Hikers traverse waterlogged peat bogs where mud pools can be thigh-deep; high-top waterproof boots and gaiters are mandatory. The trail passes through dwarf montane cloud forests dominated by gnarled Rhodomyrtus and bamboo. Trekkers must start by 6:30 AM. After 11:00 AM, freezing mountain mist blankets the peak, dropping temperatures to 6°C. Solo hikers should be alert for leopards; maintain conversation noise and do not run if a cat is sighted.
