Landed at 8am and the hotel wants an early check-in fee we never saw online — pay, wait in the lobby, or leave bags?

Flight landed early, reached the Negombo hotel before 9. Listing said check-in 2pm. Desk offered the room now for an extra early-arrival charge that was not on Booking. Bags are heavy. Is paying normal, or do travelers usually store bags and wait without a fee?

Early check-in fees happen when the room is ready and the property chooses to sell the morning — but if it was not disclosed, you can politely decline, leave bags in storage, and wait for the stated check-in time. Many desks will store luggage free and let you use a shower or lobby if you ask calmly. Paying is optional convenience, not a law. Confirm the fee in writing if you accept it. I will not invent a standard amount — policies vary by hotel.

Refused the fee, left bags, coffee in the lobby cafe until 2. Room was ready anyway by 1.

Asking for free bag storage and a lobby seat. Will only pay if we desperately need the bed now.

Same surprise once. Storage without fee is the normal ask when the listing is silent.
