Airborne LiDAR mapping across the steep, mist-shrouded escarpments of the Knuckles Conservation Zone requires advanced full-waveform laser scanning systems. The dense pygmy cloud forest canopy absorbs and reflects early laser pulses off upper leaf layers. However, roughly 3% of near-infrared laser pulses penetrate through foliage gaps down to the rocky forest floor. Processing software applies progressive morphological filter algorithms to classify and remove vegetation echoes, generating a high-resolution bare-earth Digital Elevation Model (DEM) used to study mountain hydrology and ancient footpaths.
