We are planning an expedition into the Nil Diya Pokuna cave near Ella. The descent looks intense. What underwater lighting gear survives the rocky climb down, and is the water actually as crystal clear as the photos show.

The descent is very steep and requires squeezing through narrow, jagged limestone chutes. Do not bring bulky strobe arms. You need compact, high-lumen dive torches (like Bigblue or Lume Cube) packed securely in a padded dry bag inside your backpack. And yes, the water is shockingly clear—it is an underground aquifer. You can see the rock formations 15 meters down without any distortion.

Make sure your camera housing is rated for impact, not just depth. Banging it against the rock walls on the way down is the biggest risk.

It is absolutely pitch black. It is a raw, natural cave, not a tourist trap with fairy lights. The only light in there is what you bring with you.

Keep your hands entirely free for the climb down. If you drop a light down one of those crevices, you will never see it again.

Do local guides provide any static lighting in the cave, or is it completely pitch black once you are off the ropes.
