Sri Lanka has high thunderstorm frequency, especially in the hills April-October. If caught: get off exposed ridges immediately, avoid tallest trees, don't shelter under isolated single trees, get to a valley or dense forest, crouch on balls of feet if no shelter (minimize ground contact).

Prevention: check weather app (Windy, Met Sri Lanka) before trekking, start early to finish by noon (afternoon storms most common), turn back at first thunder heard, don't trek in the hills during heavy monsoon warnings. Storm cells move fast — a clear morning can become a lightning afternoon.
