Lipton’s Seat (1,970m elevation) is a famous ridge overlook where tea pioneer Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his expanding estate empire in the 1890s. Hire a three-wheeler from Haputale town at 5:00 AM (approx. 2,500-3,500 LKR return) to reach the summit platform before 6:30 AM. On clear mornings, the lookout offers views across seven southern provinces toward the sea. After sunrise, dismiss your driver and enjoy a scenic 7km downhill hike through the tea terraces of Dambatenne Estate, ending at the historic Dambatenne Tea Factory for an orthodox factory tour.
A small entry fee (approx. 500 LKR) is collected at the final estate security barrier near the upper summit tearoom.
By 9:30 AM, heavy cloud banks rise from the southern coastal plains, completely blocking the horizon; early morning arrival is essential.
The hilltop cafe serves hot local black tea and fresh ginger biscuits beside a bronze life-size statue of Sir Thomas Lipton.
