Local barber and no shared language — how do I get a simple trim without a surprise buzzcut?
Small-town shop, friendly chairs, zero English and my Sinhala is hello-level. Hair is curling into my eyes; I want a tidy trim, not military short. Cash ready. What actually works — phone photos, hand gestures, or walking to a tourist-town salon?

Show a clear phone photo of the length you want, point to how much comes off with fingers, and say stop with an open hand as they cut. Sit where you can watch the mirror. Pay the posted or agreed price; tip small if you like. Tourist-town salons cost more and talk more English, but town barbers do fine with pictures every day. Smile beats a lecture in a language nobody shares.
