To completely avoid the expensive tourist spice gardens you must visit the Matara Main Market known locally as the Pola. It is a massive chaotic and incredibly vibrant hub located right near the main bus stand.

You will find dedicated stalls selling massive sacks of freshly roasted curry powders raw cinnamon sticks and fiery dried chilies at pure wholesale local prices.

The vendors are very friendly. Just point to what you want ask for a hundred grams and they will pack it in a paper bag for pennies compared to what you pay in Galle Fort.
