Love cake is a Portuguese-Sri Lankan-Burgher fusion cake — semolina, cashew, jaggery, honey, spices (cinnamon, cardamom, clove), and rose water. Dense, moist, aromatic, festive. Made especially at Christmas by Burgher families, also served at weddings. Yellow-golden color, distinctive fragrance.

Where to buy: Perera & Sons (year-round), Dutch Burgher Union (Christmas only, order ahead — best version), and various family bakeries in Colombo suburbs. Home-made significantly better. Slice thin — very rich.
