The Low-Country drum (Yak Bera or Ruhunu Bera) is a strictly cylindrical wooden drum measuring 68cm in length, designed to produce the rapid, driving rhythms of southern curative rituals. Master drum makers select seasoned trunk logs of mature coconut palms (Cocos nucifera), Kitul, or Kohomba. The log is hollowed by hand using curved iron chisels (Wakkotuwa) to an exact wall thickness of 1.5cm. Unlike the Kandyan Geta Bera, both heads of the Yak Bera use identical thin membranes crafted from cured cow stomach lining (inner rumen) or monkey skin, tensioned with braided cow-leather cords (Waram) to project a dry, resonant snap.
Coconut wood must be cut from the dense outer perimeter heartwood of trees over 60 years old; soft center core timber rots quickly and absorbs acoustic energy.
Drummers rub fine ash from burned tamarind pods onto drum skins before ceremonies to absorb ambient coastal humidity and preserve high head pitch.
The drum is suspended horizontally from the drummer’s waist using a braided cotton sash, struck with both open hands using complex syncopated meters (Tala).
