Madu Ganga (a recognized Ramsar wetland) is a complex estuarine lagoon containing 28 inhabited and wild islands. Touring sea kayaks have a distinct advantage over motorized tour boats: they draw less than 15cm of water, allowing paddlers to glide through narrow mangrove tunnels of Rhizophora apiculata that larger boats cannot enter. Paddlers should launch from Balapitiya at 7:30 AM to catch calm conditions before commercial tour boats begin generating wake waves across main navigation channels by 9:30 AM.

Paddlers can tie up at Cinnamon Island (Koth Duwa) to observe artisanal families harvesting and rolling true quills on outdoor wooden benches.

Avoid paddling too close to traditional ja-kottu prawn traps at night; anchored wooden screens and underwater net lines can flip narrow kayaks.
