Negotiating the extreme topographical drop along the upcountry Main Line required innovative civil engineering before tunneling technology advanced. Near Hatton and Rambukkana, surveyors constructed railway zig-zags (reversing stations). A train enters a spur line on an uphill grade, stops, and switches points so the locomotive can reverse backward up the next higher tier of the slope. This switchback mechanism enabled trains to gain elevation across impassable rock cliffs without exceeding maximum broad-gauge adhesion limits.
