Main Line railway track curvature lubrication: mechanical wayside grease pots on sharp curves?
How do SLR permanent-way maintenance crews install trackside mechanical grease applicators to reduce steel flange friction on 5-chain mountain curves?

The Main Line features exceptionally sharp curvature—down to 5-chain radius (100 meters)—climbing through the Central Highlands. Heavy diesel-electric locomotives rounding these tight bends generate intense friction between steel wheel flanges and the high outer running rail, producing piercing squeal and rapid side-wear of rail steel. To mitigate this, SLR permanent-way crews install mechanical wayside lubricators (grease pots) ahead of sharp curves. As train wheels pass, mechanical striker arms pump heavy high-pressure graphite grease onto the gauge face of the outer rail, where wheel flanges pick it up and distribute it smoothly around the curve.
Grease pots must be refilled weekly with specialized all-weather track grease that does not melt and run under hot tropical sunshine.
Excess grease spilling onto the top running table surface causes driving wheels to slip, stalling heavy trains on steep 1-in-44 mountain upgrades.
Track walkers inspect grease bar mechanisms daily, clearing accumulated ballast dust and twigs that jam the mechanical pump plungers.
