Mangosteen season: mainly May-August, some late-March start in southwestern Sri Lanka. Purple-shelled fruit with white segmented flesh — delicately sweet-sour, uniquely floral. Best from Kandy/Matale hillsides. Never harvested green — must be fully purple with a bit of give when squeezed.

Buy fresh at markets (Kandy, Peradeniya) at 300-800 LKR per kilo. Roadside vendors also sell. Choose slightly heavy fruits (flesh-filled) with intact green stem cap. Delicate to transport — eat within 2-3 days. Absolutely one of the world's best fruits.
