Guesthouse is "two minutes from the lake" which is a lie right now. Google has us in the middle of a blob. Every alley looks the same, all the signs are behind heads, and the lane we came down at 4pm is a one-way river of people. Phone torch just makes us a target. How do people actually navigate this.

Do not fight upstream on Dalada. Step one block inland off the lake - Kotugodella / the grid behind Queen's / toward the mosque side - and the alleys become streets again. Look for your hotel's coloured lantern or the dog, not the pin. If you are truly lost, the police Perahera map has reunion points and the season hotline is 081 22 33 333.

Text us a landmark we know - Queen's, the lake wall, the red-and-white cones - not "near the elephants." Someone will walk out once the tape on our lane droops. Stay on a lit corner, not in a dark gap.

We used the lake as a compass last night. If you can see water you are on Dalada. Hotel alleys off the lake are 30 seconds in normal life and 15 minutes tonight. Take the inland parallel and count doors.
